Go See City Island,

By Derrick Carney

City Island is a movie made in 2009, which came out in April of 2010, starting Emmy Nominated Andy Garcia and Julianna Margulies as a married couple seemingly stuck in a rut. Their entire family, including themselves, can not face the truth. Vince Rizzo, Garcia's character, is a corrections officer and longs to be a big star. This revelation is a secret he wants to keep from his family and hides his weekly acting classes as best he can.

This dark family comedy won the coveted audience award at the 2009 famed Tribeca Film Festival where most films go to generate a buzz which in turn brings more people out to view the film when it hits the theaters. This was its first screening and critics and movie-goers both enjoyed the hilarity that came out of this charming yet smart film about the lengths families will go to in order hide the truth from one another.

Each of the members of this dysfunctional family is hiding a secret that they believe if revealed, would destroy one another and the very foundation of their family. The father of the family, Garcia of the Ocean's films, secretly wants to be an actor and takes a weekly acting class. His wife, Joyce, played by Margulies of the Good Wife, is busy playing detective because she believes her husband is cheating on her rather than plotting a big Hollywood career.

The family has a collage-attending daughter, played by Dominik Garca-Lorido, of the Lost City, who is also hiding a secret, she is a stripper. Their young, teenage son, played by Ezra Miller, from Californication, has a weird fetish that has something to do with their 300 lb neighbor. Then there is the elder Rizzo's drama coach, played by Emmy Award Winner, Alan Arkin of Little Miss Sunshine, who also has a few secrets he's hiding.

When creating a story, a screenwriter needs to ask themselves 'why today'? What is so special about this day or this time in the family's life that makes a movie interesting. Vince Rizzo answers that question by his reaction to an acting exercises. Rizzo decides to bring home his long-lost son which he located in the prison he works at. The fact that the elder Rizzo found his long lost son in the prison he works at as a corrections officer is so much change and a lie he can't cover up, he bring him home to meet the family.

One more notable character is the elder Rizzo's acting partner played by Emily Mortimer of Shutter Island. Garcia and Mortimer's chemistry is nearly perfect for this quirky little comedy but it's the portal of they married couple of Garcia and Margulies' and their constant miscommunications and love-hate banter, in typical New York style, that are real scene stealers for this movie.

The title of the movie is named after a small town that actually exists on the outskirts of the Bronx's and is rich in family traditions. There seems to be no 'outsiders' living in the actual community and parents and grandparents pass down their homes to their children when they become too old to care for them. This town used to be a shipping retreat and basically only those in the Bronx and Manhattan know about it, until now.

This film was written and directed by Raymond De Felitta of Two Family House. There are several producers and co-producers attached to this film, including Andy Garcia. The DVD and Blu-Ray of City Island is scheduled for release on August 24, 2010. - 40728
