Famous Ballet - Sylvia

The mythology inspired ballet Sylvia, is a three-act ballet set to the music of French Composer Lo Delibes. Ashton had expressed a desire to rework Sylvia once more into a three-act ballet and in 2001 a former student of Ashton's, Christopher Newton, realized his vision and recreated Sylvia into a three-act ballet with a less complicated narrative. The ballet has been performed in recent times and met with a better reception.

Sylvia has a pastoral theme and this is reflected in the ballet's opening act that features a minor cast of nymphs, dryads, fauns and goats. The main characters are of course the ballet's huntress protagonist Sylvia and Aminta, a young shepherd boy who is in love with Sylvia. The God of love Eros and Goddess of hunting Diana also feature along with the hunter Orion who appears as the villain in the story.

The first Act of Sylvia - A Sacred Wood - introduces us to all the main characters in the ballet. The ballet begins with a scene featuring the various woodland spirits and creatures dancing for Eros - the God of love. The huntress nymph Sylvia arrives with her hunt attendants and they begin to mock the ritual they see before them. Aminta, a young shepherd boy who is in love with Sylvia is hidden watching the whole episode unfold. Seeing someone hidden in the bushes Sylvia shoots an arrow not knowing it is Aminta but her arrow injures both Eros and Aminta. Also hidden in the bushes watching is Orion who is also in love with Sylvia he seizes the opportunity to kidnap Sylvia in the ensuing commotion and takes her away to his cave.

Act two is titled Orion's Island Cave, which is the location Orion brings the kidnapped Sylvia to. Sylvia stubbornly refuses all offers of kindness such as jewelry and wine from Orion with her only thoughts focused on the wounded Aminta. She fakes a change of heart, getting Orion drunk on the wine so that she can make her escape. After invoking the God of love Eros, Sylvia receives a vision that Aminta is waiting for her at the temple of the Goddess Diana and with the help of Eros escapes from Orion.

The third act is called The Sea Coast Near The Temple Of Diana and this is where Aminta and Sylvia are reunited. However Orion is in pursuit and also arrives at the temple. Orion and Aminta fight and in the confusion Orion tries to enter Diana's shrine where Sylvia is hiding. This act enrages Diana who refuses to give Sylvia and Aminta congress. All is saved by Eros who sends a vision to Diana that reminds her of her own young love for a shepherd Endymion. This softens her heart and Aminta and Sylvia are able to come together with the blessing of the Gods. - 40728

MacMillan's talent for choreography was notable from the offset and a succession of short acclaimed works were produced for Sadler's Wells Ballet including Solitaire in 1956, The Burrow in 1958, Le baiser de la fe in 1960, The Rite of Spring in 1962 and La Cration du monde in 1964, to name just a few.

In 1965 Macmillan achieved great success with his first full-length work, Romeo and Juliet. Performed in three acts, the ballet is considered to be one of his best-loved pieces and shortly after choreographing Romeo and Juliet Macmillan was made the resident choreographer for The Royal Ballet. After a fall out with The Royal Ballet in 1966 over his work Song of the Earth, Macmillan left to work as director of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin where he stayed from 1966-69.

Macmillan returned to the Royal Ballet as director in 1970 succeeding Sir Frederick Ashton where he continued to produce and choreograph another string of widely acclaimed ballets that include Anastasia in 1971, The Seven Deadly sins in 1973, Manon in 1974, Requiem in 1976, Isadora in 1981 and his final piece in 1992, just before his death, The Judas Tree. He resigned as director of the Royal Ballet in 1977 however but continued to work as their resident choreographer - the role he preferred and felt more comfortable with.

Macmillan had a reputation for producing works that were challenging, often dwelling on the darker side of life or confronting the gritty realisms of life. The key concept behind creating a 3D film is recording the images the same way your eyes see them, using information gathered from both the left and right eye to create one image; this is called stereoscopic vision. To get the proper visual effect, 3D movies must be filmed using cameras with two side by side lenses. When a movie is developed totally using computers, such as Avatar, the 3D effect is achieved by adapting the animation process to incorporate stereoscopic vision. A 3D film is actually projected on two projectors at the same time; each one sends the film captured by one of the two dual camera lenses.

You have likely seen an old style 3D film which uses special red and blue 3D glasses to create the three dimensional depth effect. These glasses work because the two images fused to create a stereoscopic film were sent through a red light filter and a blue light filter, which can combine when you wear the 3D glasses. The optical illusions in these movies worked great, but film makers were held back in many ways, especially with the colors they could project.

Vibrating light waves moving on one plane, referred to as polarized light, is how we watch 3D movies today. While you just see one image, there are actually two projectors sending out one vertically and one horizontally polarized image during the 3D film.

The education system in America is working right, says Bob Bowdon, but simply for some -- and those few surely aren't the students. In his docudrama "The Cartel," New Jersey TV news reporter Bowdon shines a light on the depravity and avarice that has resulted in the disappearance of so much taxpayer money in that state. When $400,000 is exhausted per schoolroom, but reading proficiency is but 39% (and math at 40%), the crisis is clear, which doesn't mean it's not controversial.

On the one side is the monolithic Jersey teachers union and shadowy school officials, who guarantee that, as Bowdon points out in his film, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a atrocious example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. On the other side are the supporters of a charter education system, private schools in which parents can use tax vouchers to pay tuition and shake off the public nightmare. One of Bowdon's main criticisms is that a teacher, even a shoddy one, essentially can't be fired -- which provides zero incentive to do much actual teaching.

"'The Cartel' examines lots of different aspects of public teaching, tenure, financing, patronage drops, subversion --meaning thieving -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "The label education documentary could sound to some like boring squared, but in fact the movie itself betrays an ardent passion for the plight of particularly inner-city children."

"The Cartel" first appeared on the festival circuit in summer 2009, appearing in theaters nationally a year later. Hopefully it will get a boost, and not be overshadowed, by the more recently released documental "Waiting for Superman," by "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim. Bowdon sees the films as complementary, and hopes that "Superman," with its human-interest approach, draws more notice to his own, which focuses on public policy. "My film is the left-brained edition, more analytical," Bowdon says, "'Waiting for Superman' is more the right-brained treatment."

The left-brained approach means arguments that watch the economics -- money misspent, opportunities wasted. But that isn't to say the film is without heart. Bowdon makes sure his eye is invariably on the people affected, in particular the inner-city students trapped in a disordered system. The tearful face of a young girl who learns she was not selected for a place at a charter school makes its own great debate for the unsatisfying failure of a state's education system.

And while it may be straightforward to admit the presence of corruption in a state so associated with organized crime, the uncomfortable fact of the matter is that this is a vastly familiar situation. A watcher anyplace in the country will discern similar failings in their own school system, and may share Bowdon's frustration and zeal for a solution. Bowdon puts his faith in the charter schools, where the taxpayer has influence over the kind and quality of instruction. However he also knows it'll be an upward battle to regain control from those who've worked so hard to make education very profitable for the very few. - 40728

In his documentary "The Cartel," Bowdon, a New Jersey TV news newsperson, turns the camera upon the massive degeneracy and misdirection that has led his state to throw away more than any other on its students only with shoddy results. It's not difficult for Bowdon to illustrate that something's awfully improper with a state that pays $17,000 per student but can only wield a 39% reading proficiency rate -- that there's a crisis is undeniable, how to deal with it is different question altogether.

The two sides of this struggle meet head-on in interviews throughout Bowdon's movie: there are the teachers union and school board members who have managed to allocate 90 cents of every taxpayer buck into everything but teachers' salaries -- though' various school administrators make upwards of $100,000. On the other side are the supporters of a charter education system, private schools in which parents can use tax vouchers to pay tuition and get away from the public nightmare. Bowdon makes much of the fact that it's practically impossible for a teacher to be fired. Thus having a safety net that does little to promote hard work in those teachers who acknowledge they hold a vocation regardless of how many of the three Rs they instruct -- if any.

"'The Cartel' examines lots of diverse aspects of public education, tenure, funding, support drops, subversion --meaning theft -- vouchers and charter schools," says Bowdon. "And as such it sort of serves as a rapid-moving primer on all of the blistering topics within the education-reform front."
