A Pointed Synopsis Of Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Terminator 2 - Judgment Day is one of the best action/sci-fi movies that has ever been put to screen. Though it may not seem like it has much to say about the human condition, it actually has a few things to say. Add to that a little bit of campy dialog and action and some wonderful cinematography and you are left with a very charming movie.

This movie pits a ragtag group, Sarah Conner, John Conner, and the original Terminator against a much more sophisticated robot from the future, the T-1000. The T-1000 is a nearly indestructible robot that has a liquid metal that allows it to mimic almost anything it wants to.

The heroes in the story are trying to stop a global Armageddon that is going to have the machines taking over the world. There is a thought that occurs to Sarah about halfway through the movie that she is going to be able to stop this impending doom of the human race. We find out in the next movie that, though they seem to succeed in this movie, they only managed to move the date back of this take over.

There are many aspects of fate to consider in this movie. Sarah was fated to be the mother of the savior of the human race. John was meant to be that savior. They never were given a choice in this. Sarah wasn't even pregnant yet when the first Terminator showed up, so she clearly had no idea what was in store for her.

There are other issues at play here as well. Sarah Conner is in a mental institute at the beginning of the movie. This could be seen as a sort of discussion on the state of mental health care in America. Though her story does seem very crazy, and she has become quite a violent woman, she actually isn't crazy. The audience knows that.

Yet everyone treats her like she is a completely insane woman. Are the filmmakers trying to say that, at the time this movie came out, mental health providers aren't much more than professional guessers when it comes to mental illness? That if they don't believe something than it must be a problem with the other person? They don't go into this too much, so much of this has to be inferred, but there might be something there.

There are issues of fate surrounding John so much it seems to stick to him. He doesn't really believe everything that his mom has told him. A part of him does, it seems, but he doesn't really know that she isn't just crazy. It takes the arrival of the robots from the future in order for him to see that he is not actually being raised by a crazy woman.

The strange thing about Terminator 2 - Judgment Day is that if we take the time-traveling robots out of the equation, then we see a completely different story. Without them showing up, John is being raised by a series of foster parents and a crazy woman. He is being told crazy things that really don't make a lot of sense. And it's all coming from the mind of a very seriously mentally ill woman. Fortunately, the robots do so up, so instead of a story about a horribly dysfunctional family, we are instead treated to a story with some of the most amazing action sequences ever put on film. - 40728

The Last Dragon was a film produced by Motown Records in the mid-eighties, and while it was sort of created as a way to market a few singles, notably Oh Sheila, the film still stands as a pretty good Kung Fu movie, a good comedy, and one of the all time must download movies of the eighties. It's fun, funny, sort of corny and very eighties.

The story follows a young man nicknamed "Bruce Leroy", a Harlem martial artist who teaches Kung Fu to the local kids. He works at his father's pizza place, delivering pies on foot and deals with his rival, Sho'Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem... Yep. Sho'Nuff... The Shogun of Harlem. This incredibly goofy martial arts tale takes place on the real streets of modern day Harlem and creates a really quirky, one of a kind movie.

He really is a great character. Maybe one of the all time classic comedy movie villains. He's colorful, ridiculous, short tempered and always funny. He wears visor sunglasses (You know, the ones that look like horizontal blinds), as well as shoulder pads, hakama (the baggy pants you always see in samurai films), and a top knot/Rick James kind of hair style. It's just plain hilarious watching him come on screen. He always starts with his big introductory piece, demanding that his lackeys affirm his meanness, badness and prettiness before engaging in any business.

There's a subplot that you probably... Won't take too much interest in. See, Leroy is after the heart of this girl who produces a local music show, and there's this sleazy promoter who's trying to get his girlfriend's new single played on her show. When you see the video, you'll grimace and shudder in embarrassment just for watching it, so... It's funny, but you find yourself wishing they'd just get back to the kung fu already!

But regardless, it is funny, and it does pay off with a big brawl scene at the end when he hires all the meanest guys in the city to attack Bruce Leroy and his students. The end result is a really great rumble scene with Leroy taking on a few dozen hilarious, wild characters before finally beating Sho'Nuff and attaining "The Glow" which is what you call it when they draw a halo of light around your body frame by frame.

There are a ton of fun, corny eighties movie moments along the way, with Bruce Leroy seeking out an old Confucian master of wisdom; the guy who writes fortune cookies. When he discovers that the fortune cookie writer is actually a computer, he has a moment of zen like clarity.

Could the movie have been better without the weird subplot about the record promoter? Sure, but even so, it's one of the all time classic eighties flicks, and one of the best attempts at spoofing the Kung Fu genre while at the same time honoring it. It's also just plain a whole lot of fun.

So it's exciting, it's funny, and it has all the goofiness and colorful style you want from an eighties movie. Give it a download. - 40728

The Movie Fresh Directed By Boaz Yakin

Writer director Boaz Yakin has had an interesting career in Hollywood. He's always been, primarily, a write for hire. He has had very few personal projects, mainly sticking to studio work like Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Most of his work is... Let's be honest, mediocre and forgettable. It's not his fault, it's just that these are the dull projects they give him to work with. So what is one of his movies doing on a review labeled "must see movie downloads"?

Well, before making Fresh, he went into a brief exile, stating that he would not return to film making until he had something to say. And... He lived up to that promise. Fresh is a powerful statement.

The film follows a young boy working as a drug mule for various mid-level dealers around the city. He makes anywhere from twenty to fifty bucks a run, and he's been storing that money in a coffee can by the railroad tracks. The money really adds up when you save it, and Fresh is saving it. For what? We won't say. Save to say that the way the movie plays out is really something.

Fresh spends one afternoon a week learning to play chess from his father, who is estranged from the rest of the family. These scenes are something like the Greek chorus scenes of the film, with Fresh reflecting on what's been happening and contemplating his next move.

Think of it as Fistful of Dollars set in the ghetto. When a girl Fresh has a crush on, as well as a childhood friend, are murdered in a random shooting by one of the drug dealers he works for, Fresh hatches a plan to take revenge on all of the pushers and scumbags he deals with on a daily basis, freeing himself and his family from the clutches of the drug dealers.

Fresh's scheme to take the badguys down is really incredible, serving as a fascinating parallel to the chess games he plays with his father. The master stroke of his plan is that none of his opponents suspect him of a thing, as he is, after all, just a kid. He essentially manages to play dumb and innocent, while in fact outsmarting everyone around him.

The tightrope he walks to work the scheme is suspenseful, dangerous, frightening, knowing that at any moment, they could catch on to him and put him under the ground.

It's a rare film that works this well with such touchy subject material. The film takes a child of ten years old and puts him into a Fistful of Dollars/Yojimbo style plot, scheming and plotting his way to victory over deadly, menacing criminals. It's incredible how delicate an operation this is, to make the movie exciting and suspenseful without selling short the reality and truth of the subject matter of real life street violence. - 40728

See The Hit Film The Wrestler

If you haven't seen the Wrestler yet, what are you waiting for? Don't you think it's at the top of everyone's movie downloads queue for a reason? Actually, you're probably sick of hearing about the movie at this point, so why not just watch the darn thing and get it over with?

Rourke really does provide the heart and soul of this movie, and even the body, taking some real bumps in the name of giving a great show. He plays Randy The Ram Robinson, a wrestler who was huge in the eighties, during the hair metal days, and has since faded into obscurity. He still wrestles, but it doesn't pay the bills alone, as he wrestles for small crowds, and he has to supplement his income with hours at the grocery store.

Randy has lived a self destructive lifestyle, and he's paying the price for it. He's lost touch with his family, and while there's a real bond between him and the boys in the locker room, he doesn't really have anyone that's truly close to him. So the movie follows him as he attempts to make a comeback and reunite with his daughter.

The movie is heart wrenching, incredibly emotional, and while it shows Randy as he is, as a man who has hurt himself and others with his lifestyle, it never judges him or looks down on him. Randy the Ram is a lovable guy, and it becomes tragic that all cannot be forgiven so easily.

Again, it's all about Mickey Rourke here. The story of the Wrestler is as much his as it is Randy's. Rourke himself has made a few mistakes, and just like Randy, was on the comeback trail. So the result is that he doesn't just play this role, he lived it. Interestingly, the role was going to go to Nicholas Cage, but Cage dropped out so that Rourke could take it.

They might have been able to secure a bigger budget had Cage stayed on, but the end result is a smaller, more intimate, personal movie, and it's all that much better for it. Rourke wrestles for small crowds, and it really drives home the fact that Randy gives his all to every show, whether he's wrestling for a few thousand fans or a few dozen. He really bleeds it out.

The story is an old one, the characters are stock, but it never feels cliche or predictable. The movie is invested with such real humanity that it really feels like a unique, one of a kind tale of loss and redemption. Even if you weren't so big on Pi and Requiem for a Dream, this may be Darren Aronofsky's masterpiece, and it certainly shows a deeper level of humanity than his previous efforts.

When you hear the acoustic song by Springsteen at the end, take a moment to reflect on what the ending really means. This movie has a lot of depth, and sits somewhere between Rocky and Raging Bull in the pantheon of sports movies. It is, at once, heart breaking and heart warming, both upbeat and tragic, and the ending really drives that home. At the very least, it's a story you'll never forget. - 40728

Eve seems to be on some sort of mission, but Wall-E over looks this because he is so pre-occupied with the attraction he feels towards her. Just like humanity, this little robot is absorbed with Eve and her "beauty".

Wall-E is designed to clean up a waste-covered earth. This job might be the greatest thing that has ever happened to little wall-e because it leads him to Eve, which leads him to the future. Although he comes in counter with something that was not pre-thought, his instinct is to fix it.

When he arrives in outer space, he does not have anything on his mind aside from Eve. He has no idea where he is, or what is going on their. "Paranormal Activity" is a movie that has recently been picked up by Paramount Pictures. This movie was originally an independent film that found many fans at Screamfest. Almost two years later the film is coming out again, this time with a different ending.

Steven Spielberg is said to be a big fan of this film and reportedly had a hand in its final scene.

The main characters are few. Katie and Micah are a young couple having minor relationship struggles, but they are clearly in love and supportive of one another.

As the movie begins the couple is relocating to San Diego. Soon the couple realizes that there is something wrong in the their new home. They begin to believe that the home is haunted, and then Katie tells another story. A story of a poltergeist that may have have killed her sister in the past.

This idea does not seem realistic to Micah, so he devises a plan to get to the bottom of the occurences. With the help of his video camera he begins to record the home at night.

The results are not what Micah expects. The tape shows a ghost in the home and Micah concludes that antagonizing the ghost is a good plan.

The couple eventually meets with a specialist in paranormal phenomenon, but obtain few insights. The specialist abruptly ends the consultation, asserting that he does not have the skill or ability necessary to handle this type of ghost.

As the movie continues Micah proceeds to aggravate the ghost in any way. Micah even decides to get a Ouija board to see if the ghost will begin to communicate with them. All of these activities lead to a dramatic ending.

This is a very strong effort, albeit in a minor key, and shows how economical you can be with a story line and still keep the audience riveted for ninety minutes.
